Education

 

Education in Peru is mandatory for children between the ages of 7 years and 16 years. Its free for those who attend public school. Public universities are also free for those who cannot afford tuition. In 2008, World Bank determined that Peru had the best education system in Latin America. Similarly, UNESCO determined that only 4% of school-aged children are not enrolled in school. However, in 2012, The Programme for International Student Assessment placed Peru at the bottom of the ranking in three categories (math, science and reading) compared to 65 nations participating in the study of 15-year-olds' scholastic performance.

 

The education policy of Peru aims to spread indigenous culture and language throughout. The native languages, like Spanish and Quechua, are learned in primary education while foreign languages are studied in seconday. Primary education is imparted in native languages of Peru.

 

As a profession, teachers are highly regarded in Peru with more respect for those with higher degrees. With the help of these teachers, in 2011, 89.6% of adults and 97.4% of youth were literate.
